University Engagement

University is a time of exploration, independence, and discovery. For many students, it is the first time they are traveling on their own, experiencing new cultures, and navigating the world without the safety nets of home.

It is also a moment of openness — when students are curious, forming lifelong habits, and learning how to take responsibility for their own safety and well-being.

The John Wesley Heathco Legacy Foundation’s University Engagement pillar is built around this critical window of opportunity.

By partnering with colleges and universities, we aim to equip students with the awareness, tools, and confidence they need to stay safe as they explore the world — honoring Johnny’s love of travel while helping prevent future tragedies.

Our work focuses on two key areas:
Study Abroad Safety & Innovative Technology

Study Abroad Safety

As more students study and travel abroad, many are unknowingly exposed to risks.

CO alarms are often not required in most hotels and short-term housing in other countries. This creates a dangerous gap in protection for students living and traveling overseas.

We partner with universities to meet students before they leave — providing education, practical guidance, and portable travel carbon monoxide alarms. By building awareness early, we empower students to take simple, proactive steps to protect themselves wherever they go.

The foundation is currently working with Dartmouth College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to expand this effort and reach more students participating in study abroad programs. Study abroad should be transformative — not dangerous. Our goal is simple: every student should be able to Adventure Safely.

If your university is interested in partnering with us, we welcome the opportunity to work together.

Innovative Technology

In addition to education and prevention, we believe universities are powerful engines for innovation.

At Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Johnny’s alma mater, a team of engineering students known as the Carbon Canaries is developing an innovative portable carbon monoxide alarm designed for everyday use.

Inspired by real-world need, this student-led effort aims to create a practical, accessible device that can travel anywhere — helping protect individuals and families from an invisible and often overlooked danger.

By supporting student innovation, we are not only addressing today’s risks, but also helping to develop the solutions of tomorrow.
