What is Carbon Monoxide Poisoning?

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a silent but deadly threat that claims lives every year.

This colorless, odorless gas is produced by common devices like stoves, furnaces, grills, and cars, making it a hidden danger in our daily lives. When inhaled, CO blocks oxygen from reaching your blood, depriving your brain, heart, and vital organs of air. Symptoms can start with headaches and dizziness, but can quickly worsen, leading to confusion, unconsciousness, and even death. 

Types of Carbon Monoxide Exposure

When you inhale carbon monoxide (CO), it binds to hemoglobin in your blood more effectively than oxygen, forming carboxyhemoglobin, which reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen to vital organs. 

Acute

At high levels, such as in acute exposure from a malfunctioning heater or car exhaust, this can quickly lead to severe symptoms like confusion, impaired coordination, dizzyness, unconsciousness, and potentially death within minutes to hours due to oxygen deprivation.

Chronic

At low levels over long periods, such as from chronic exposure in poorly ventilated spaces with smoldering fires or faulty appliances, the effects are more insidious, causing persistent fatigue, headaches, nausea, memory problems, and flu-like symptoms, which may worsen over time and lead to long-term neurological damage or heart issues if not addressed.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets a permissible exposure limit (PEL) for carbon monoxide at 50 parts per million (ppm) over an 8-hour time-weighted average for workplace settings, while the National Insitute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends a lower limit of 35 ppm over the same period. However, even at these levels, sensitive individuals may experience symptoms, and chronic exposure below 50 ppm can still cause subtle health issues over time, such as memory problems or cardiovascular strain.

The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests that levels as low as 10 ppm over 8 hours can begin to affect health, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces where CO from sources like gas appliances or vehicle exhaust can accumulate unnoticed. Thus, maintaining proper ventilation and using CO detectors are critical to preventing the insidious dangers of low-level exposure.

Carbon monoxide can be found wherever fuel is burned. Common sources include:

Emissions from cars, trucks, and motorcycles can build up in enclosed spaces like garages or tunnels

Furnaces, fireplaces, and water heaters that burn fuel emit CO and should be properly vented

Portable generators and grills present risk of CO exposure if used indoors or too close to windows

Workplaces involving combustion engines, welding, or other fuel-burning activities may pose CO exposure risks

Take Preventative Action

Install and Maintain CO Detectors

Install CO alarms on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. Place CO alarms at least 5 feet away from fuel-burning appliances to prevent false alarms.

Test CO alarms monthly to ensure they are functioning properly.

Replace Batteries in CO alarms at least once a year, or as recommended by the manufacturer.

Replace CO alarms every 5–7 years, or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Appliances, Ventilation, and Generators

Have fuel-burning appliances inspected and serviced annually by a qualified technician. Clean chimneys and flues annually to remove blockages, debris, or creosote buildup.

Never block or seal vents, exhausts, or flues from fuel-burning appliances. Keep garage doors open when starting a vehicle to avoid CO buildup.

Operate portable generators only outdoors, at least 20 feet away from windows, doors, and vents. Charcoal grills or portable stoves should not be used indoors or in enclosed spaces.
